A Drift of Quills: Where Are You?

Where Are You?

I’ll bet your email box and social media feeds look a lot like mine: they’re full of news and information about COVID-19. It’s easy to get lost in all the noise! But as the weeks have gone by, I’ve seen a subtle change. A beautiful change…

There are more stories about the ways people are helping people. About how folks stuck at home are learning to adapt and cope. About how neighborhoods are becoming closer as residents go outside for walks and exercise (still keeping that six-foot safety zone around them!). There is time now for them to visit. There is so much shared experience in this crazy time we’re going through as a global community.

Someone (unfortunately I’ve lost the original source) talked about how they can’t wait for things to get back to normal, then curiously wondered what the new normal will be. Are you using this worldwide time-out to look for the good things around you? It’s a good time to start new, healthy habits. To achieve some goals you might not otherwise have been able to do. In this unprecedented time in your own story, where are you?

While we all have to keep our distance for now, I hope you have the courage to embrace hope, and love, and gratitude. Lastly, I want to share this beautiful wish that came to my mailbox from author Tomi Adeyemi:

“I hope you and your loved ones are safe and that you’re all healthy. I hope that you’re still able to provide for yourself and keep a roof over your head and food on your plate (and if that’s not the case, then I hope the new resources, charity efforts, and fundraisers popping up can help fill these needs).

It’s rough and it’s very likely that it’ll be rougher, so please find something that can make you smile during these hard times, or something that can bring you joy. Even if that joy is fleeting, it helps us deal with all the pain.”

There is nothing like a pandemic to bring out the best in some people and things. Here is a list of ten things that over the past weeks, have encouraged me and/or for which I have found myself most grateful. With the exception of No. 1, they are not in any particular order of importance …

I’m thankful. Thankful it’s Spring. Thankful it’s April. Every day brings new life. We dig in the dirt. The boys collect bugs and worms. We tend to a garden that has slept well all Winter, and is ready to wake as Spring sings it awake. I have more time at home, as many do, and I find opportunity to catch up on projects and chores that have waited patiently…

What is something amazing you’ve seen as a result of the coronavirus situation?
Where are you? And what are you doing while you “shelter in place”?
